Where did it come from?
Magic is so old, that it's origins are back in the mists of time.
Prehistoric hunters would paint animals they intended to kill on cave walls; creating the first ever written spells.
Stories of heroes, myths, god, goddesses, prophets and prophetesses all feature aspects of magic (and or miracles).

When were the first spells?
The Egyptians are credited with writing down some of the first 'spells' on the interior of tombs (like the Pyramids).
Thoth was classed as the god of writing and magic (amongst other things).
The famous book of the dead is (said to be from the New Kingdom) an evolution of the Pyramid Texts. Written entirely in hieroglyphs.
Egyptians held that the soul (or Ka ) left the body of at death. (Both men and gods.) They thought that Ka was sustained by food and drink; which is why food sacrifices were left for the dead.
